Signe - On Stage

Behind Set the Choir Free ApS stands Signe Sørensen — a Danish choir leader, composer, and pianist with more than 20 years of experience. Her innovative approach to choir leadership places emotional well-being at the center of musical learning. Through two decades of practice, she has seen how the method not only develops skilled singers but also confident and connected young people.

Signe has taught choir leadership at conservatories and universities in both Denmark and abroad, and she has supported choir leaders through a wide range of workshops and courses.

From 2007 to 2015, she was the conductor and artistic director of Mariagerfjord Korskole (Mariagerfjord Choir School) under Mariagerfjord Kulturskole. The choirs quickly gained European recognition for their musical quality and pioneering pedagogical work. Many of the images and videos on this website come from this period.

From 2018 to 2024, Signe was the conductor and musical/pedagogical project leader for Alle Kan Synge (Everybody Can Sing) in Copenhagen — an initiative that brings the Set the Choir Free method to public school children aged 6–10.
During this time, she trained 10 choir leaders in the method, who now teach more than 1,000 children twice a week across three Copenhagen public schools.

In 2024, Alle Kan Synge (Everybody can Sing) became the subject of a 6.7 million DKK research project conducted by the National Institute of Public Health. The purpose of the project is to document how well-being-centered choir singing integrated into the school day can increase children’s well-being and mental health.

Signe - Off Stage

Signe has always lived a fast-paced life, driven by high expectations and plenty of adrenaline. But in 2015, her body said stop. She was diagnosed with the chronic bowel disease colitis, and suddenly it became necessary to slow down and create a new balance where health and creativity could thrive side by side.

One of the greatest challenges turned out to be her body’s reaction to adrenaline: instead of giving her energy, it now makes her ill. For someone whose life had always been tied to the stage, this was a painful paradox — that the very spark of performing had become something her body could no longer tolerate.

This became the springboard for choosing a new path, and the dream of creating a digital teaching platform has since grown from a deep desire to keep creating and sharing everything she carries at heart — while respecting the signals of her body.

Today, Signe sees her illness as a companion that reminds her to choose a more sustainable and compassionate way of living, and it has shown her a new way of being both a person and a creator. It is precisely in the tension between the artistic and the sustainable life that Signe now feels ready to share her pedagogical method with the world.

When she is not working, Signe lives a quiet and grounded life in the countryside with her wife and their four children. She finds calm in the garden, in the rhythm of nature, and in building things with her hands — and it is in this simplicity that she finds the energy that fuels her creative work.
