Signe sees every singer as unique and essential – both to the sound and to the community.
Signe has had a profoundly formative influence on my life as a choir singer – pedagogically, musically (and humanly!) – and especially on my own work as a choir conductor.
It is very clear that Signe sees every singer in the choir as unique and essential to the choir, both in sound and in community. This approach clearly fosters enthusiasm for the music, for one another, and for the shared expression.
What’s especially powerful is that the methods Signe uses are completely transferable to many different choirs, regardless of age group. I still use several of her exercises today in both my youth choir (ages 18–35) and my senior choir (60+), exercises that date back to 11 years ago when I sang under Signe in Mariagerfjord Girls’ Choir.
To set the choir free is to give singers the space to take ownership of the choir, the music, and the community. And that is the greatest gift a well-functioning choir can receive.
Signe was – and still is – a huge inspiration. I feel incredibly fortunate to have been part of the girls’ choir. It holds a very special and cherished place in my heart.
